Simulation training for health professionals of today and tomorrow
Providing quality of life
to people with serious illness
Through a partnership with Chesapeake Palliative Medicine, AAMC
offers palliative care to patients who are seriously ill. Palliative
care provides relief of symptoms associated with serious illness.
These can include chronic pain, stress, shortness of breath,
fatigue, constipation, nausea, loss of appetite, difficulty sleeping,
and an overall decreased quality of life. A dedicated team of
doctors, nurses and specialists work with the patient’s primary
care physician to help navigate care. By better understanding
treatment options, patients and their families gain more control
over their care for the best possible quality of life.
Here are just a few of our partnerships:
As new medical technologies continue to
emerge at an ever-increasing pace, the
James and Sylvia Earl Simulation to Advance
Innovation and Learning (SAIL) Center ensures
patient safety through advanced training. A
world-class medical simulation and training
facility, the Earl SAIL Center hosts national
teleconferences, lectures, research, and
large-group sessions for surgical education,
all of which help to develop staff skills and
knowledge. The Earl SAIL Center also provides
tours and educational opportunities for school
children, the community, and organizations
dedicated to healthcare improvement and
patient safety.

Enhancing health
through research
AAMC offers patients clinical trials through the
AAMC Research Institute. Clinical trials are studies
in which people volunteer to take part in tests
of new drugs or procedures. Doctors use clinical
trials to develop new treatments for serious
diseases such as cancer. We partner with the Johns
Hopkins Institute for Clinical and Translational
Research and were the inaugural member of the
Johns Hopkins Clinical Research Network. AAMC
also has affiliations with the National Cancer
Institute and National Institutes of Health.
