Treatment for co-occurring
disorders (mental health and
substance abuse) has been
fragmented and disconnected. The
rates for suicide and binge drinking
are higher in our area as compared
to the national average.
Steps we’re taking
AAMC offers access to integrated
behavioral healthcare through
the expansion of our Pathways
program to treat both mental
health and substance abuse.
The result is improved care for
individuals with co-occurring
disorders.

Steps we’re taking
AAMC provides the community with
education, screenings, smoking
cessation programs, support groups,
and access to early detection and
treatment programs to reduce the
number of people who get lung
cancer and melanoma. See pages
6 and 7 for details.

Chronic Conditions
Steps we’re taking
AAMC works to increase education and screening efforts
related to risk factors, behavior modification and early
treatment. We focus on people who have the highest risk,
including minorities and elderly people.

Obesity is often the result of an overall energy imbalance
due to poor diet and limited physical activity. Obesity
increases the risk for health conditions such as coronary
heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure,
stroke, liver and gallbladder disease, sleep apnea and
breathing problems, osteoarthritis, and poor health status.
Steps we’re taking
AAMC partners with the Healthy Anne Arundel Coalition,
churches and the local housing authority to increase access
to healthier food and exercise options to increase the
number of people at a healthy weight.
