Role
Reversal
As Marshall Steele, M.D., lay in his
hospital bed the day after having total
knee replacement surgery at AAMC,
he considered skipping group physical
therapy. Reluctantly, he allowed a nurse
to wheel him into the room—just to
observe. But when he saw patients and
staff interacting with one another, his
mood quickly improved.
“I always coached my patients to get out of their room
and mingle with one another,” Dr. Steele says. “I believed
in group therapy but never realized how powerful it was
until I experienced it firsthand. Within minutes of entering
that room, my adrenaline kicked in and I instantly felt better.
Not just mentally, but physically.”
Back to the start
Dr. Steele joined AAMC in 1977 and devoted 31 years
to the medical center as an orthopedic surgeon. He
founded the AAMC Center for Joint Replacement, which
revolutionized the joint replacement surgery experience
for patients. The program—with its integrated approach
that focuses on patient education, a dedicated team
of employees, group activities, family involvement,
