PROSTATE CANCER
Knowing Is
Half the Battle
It is not surprising, then, that when talking about his cancer
treatment, he says, “Next to a smiling face, a good explanation
is crucial to overcoming the fear.”
In 2011, Fitzwater learned the cancer for which he had
undergone a radical prostatectomy in 1997 had returned. He
was afraid and unsure of his options.
But he didn’t let that stop him from taking charge of his
health. He sought out the most advanced medical treatment
in an environment that made him feel comfortable and
eased his fears.
“I have at least three hospitals within 35 to 40 miles of my home,” he
says, adding that he had hoped he would find what he was looking for
at AAMC.
“I wanted a hospital that was local, that was mine, that I could get to
regularly—and where I knew the area and knew the people.” After visiting a
number of hospitals, Fitzwater was pleased to learn about the DeCesaris Cancer
Institute and how it could offer him a state-of-the-art, non-invasive procedure
to treat his prostate cancer.
Clear communication has always been important
to Marlin Fitzwater, who spent his career
explaining sensitive and sometimes complicated
information to the American public. The 69-year-
old Deale, Md., resident spent a decade as the
White House press secretary under Ronald Reagan
and George H. W. Bush.

Helping Survivors Thrive
Patients completing treatment for cancer are often surprised that they feel more
scared than relieved.
That’s where AAMC’s Cancer Survivorship program comes in. Led by Ravin Garg, M.D.,
medical oncologist, and supported in part by a grant from Susan G. Komen of
Maryland, it helps breast cancer survivors get answers to their questions and
take charge of their health.
